Rainforest Relief and NYCAG Target FSC Lies in High Line Protest
Activists with Rainforest Relief and New York Climate Action Group unfurled a banner on the High Line targeting the use of FSC-certified wood logged from old growth Amazon forests for the benches, bleachers and decking of the High Line.
Forests - among many other "services" - store huge amounts of carbon. The release of carbon from deforestation is one of the main contributors to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. REDD - Reduced Emissions from deforestation and forest degradation - is one of the „big new ideas“ to save the planet from runaway climate change. Under REDD huge amounts of money would be transferred for the protection of forest areas. Many REDD proponents favour raising this money through a carbon trading regime.
But is money and carbon trading really the cure to slow down deforestation? REDD-Monitor critically analyses the problems related to REDD.
