The soy boom in the east of this South American country has led to wild land speculation in the largely undeveloped north of the Paraguayan Chaco. Large landowners and speculators are disputing the land tenure of indigenous ancestral land. Land predators want to create a fait accompli by clearing the jungle as quickly as possible in order to build pastures. Because of the soy boom in Paraguay and neighbouring countries Argentina and Brazil, traditional animal husbandry and other ecologically sustainable ways of living are being eliminated. Recently, the Chaco jungle began being further threatened for"biodiesel" plantations to cultiave jatropha (Jatropha Curcas).
In the vastness of the Chaco forest, the native inhabitants have survived until today, including groups which live without any contact and in voluntary isolation. By law, the land is entitled to the indigenous peoples, but only in isolated cases they have been issued the land title. Speculators, however, are continually attempting to register indigenous lands for their own purposes.
Rainforesst Rescue plans to buy Chaco jungle for the Acoreo and Enxet with the support of support local indigenous, environmental and human rights organizations. With this purchase, we seek to protect the jungle from the threat of deforestation and help the indigenous peoples to get back their ancestral land. The land prices are currently at around 120 Euros per hectare. One hectare is 10,000 square meters. The conditions for the purchase of the woods have yet to be negotiated. One square meter of Chaco forest hardly costs more than 1 Cent!
