WRM Video: Women raise their voices against tree plantations

Mar 9, 2009

Industrial tree plantations rapidly spread in the global South.

Industrial tree plantations rapidly spread in the global South. The raw materials produced are mainly exported to the global North. The impacts of the plantations on natural ecosystems and local communities are devastating.

As a result of three workshop with women in the global South, World Rainforest Movement (WRM) prepared the following video Women raise their voices against tree plantations with examples from Brazil, Nigeria and Papua new Guinea. The main reason for choosing cases in those countries was that all had something in common: the direct or indirect involvement of the European Union in the spread of such plantations. The importance of the EU involvement in the three cases is that within the industrialized North, the European Union is perhaps the one that has developed more gender-sensitive policies, both applicable at the internal and external level. It was therefore felt that there was a need to document the contradiction between what those gender policies say and how other EU policies result in specific impacts on women in the South.

The information presented in the video is complemented with a summary of the full report containing the findings of the workshops. Here the summary of the report.
