Rainforest Destroyer of the Month -- Neste's Fuel from Rainforests

Mar 12, 2009

Finland's Neste Oil will soon be making diesel from palm oil, vegetable oil and animal fat in Singapore, to power cars in Europe and North America. This is wrong for so many reasons: palm oil destroys rainforests, food should not be fuel, and industrial agrofuels falsely claim to reduce carbon emissions.

It will take decades to recoup the carbon lost when primary forests are cleared for oil palm production, something Indonesia intends to continue ramping up on carbon rich peatland soils.

For this ecological crime against rainforests, climate and all the world's people, Neste Oil is awarded Rainforest Rescue's new "Rainforest Destroyer of the Month" award. We are very interested in receiving your nominations for future awards, and are particularly interested in highlighting biofuel and logging development which destroys and diminishes primary and old growth forests, and the welfare of forest dependent local peoples. As we move forward we intend to allow you to vote on the award, and we may begin granting it weekly, as there is so much rainforest destruction occurring.
