DRC: People and nature in eastern Congo need peace!
Dear friends of the rainforests,
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) faces a crisis that demands immediate international attention.
Over the next few days, we’ll be presenting three urgent petitions addressing interconnected threats to Congo’s people and forests. Each petition tackles a different aspect of this crisis, but all are linked by a common thread: the future of one of the world’s most vital ecosystems hangs in the balance.
Armed conflict in eastern DRC has displaced more than 7 million people and created a humanitarian catastrophe. The fighting has also devastated regions that are biodiversity hotspots and home to critically endangered mountain gorillas, eastern lowland gorillas, and chimpanzees.
The violence is fueled by competition for Congo’s valuable natural resources – minerals, timber, and land. Forests are destroyed, protected areas are militarized, and conservation efforts collapse when communities are forced to flee.
Peace isn’t just a humanitarian necessity, it’s an environmental imperative. Without security and stability, there can be no effective forest protection, no sustainable development, and no future for the region’s extraordinary biodiversity.
Please sign the petition: People and nature in eastern Congo need peace!
