Logger with chainsaw and rosewood logs in Nigeria
Petition

Tell Nigeria’s leaders: enforce the timber export ban now!

Dear friends of the rainforests,

Gorillas, chimpanzees, and elephants – Nigeria’s rainforests are home to some of the planet’s most extraordinary wildlife. Yet these forests are being destroyed at a frightening pace. President Bola Tinubu has now taken an important step by banning the export of timber and wood products.

A political milestone – and a rare glimmer of hope.

“The export ban acknowledges the bitter truth that illegal logging has become a national crisis,” says our Nigerian partner Odey Oyama.

But a decree alone will not stop the destruction. The ban must be enforced with determination, backed by transparency and strong partnerships with local communities.

Odey is working tirelessly toward this goal – and he’s counting on your support.

Please sign our joint petition to help protect Nigeria’s forests!

President strengthens forest protection – but police arrest forest defenders

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has banned timber exports to protect forests – yet rainforest defender Martins Egot has been arrested, accused of inciting young people to violence. The activists had stopped machinery belonging to the logging company Ezemac as it entered the Ekuri Community Forest. The case shows that presidential decrees are not enough – the forest’s future will be decided on the ground.
